”Caring for wells will make them live longer”, could have been the motto of the last BGR training course. During November 5-9, experts from BGR Jordan delivered a training on operation and maintenance of domestic wells. The participants were more than 20 technical staff from the Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) and the Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI).

The event, which took place in the Water Training Centre in Marka, Amman, was the fourth out of a series of BGR trainings. BGR is working hard to have this training included in the WAJ training curriculum to ensure that trainings will continue regularly in the future. The BGR staff developed the trainings in the context of WAJ and water companies operating with limited staff capacities, tools and budgets available for operation and maintenance. In this regard, there is potential for improvement of both the operation and maintenance of wells to achieve a more sustainable groundwater management. In its current project, BGR intensively works directly with the water companies as well as with the MWI and WAJ to improve this. Other activities in the wellfield management project component include the development of guidelines, promotion materials and the offering of technical training to technical staff and managers.

WAJ generously made their Water Training Centre in Amman available for this event which consists of four days of technical lessons, there was one day of fieldwork. On this field day, participants tested monitoring equipment and measured well performance parameters at wellheads.
